Reconstructing Her Identity
Name changed for the story to “Sukanya.” What is the story about? Reconstructing ones identity through Hamri Bahini and economically empowered. This is the story of a 23 year old young woman. Like every child Sukanya aspired to complete her education and build her own identity as an educated woman. To fulfill her aspirations, her family moved to the city of dreams, Kathmandu. No one could have ever imagined the socio-economic hardships and challenges that were to follow after their move.
As a result of the challenges, Sukanya had to drop her education. At the face of challenges, when one door closed another door opened for Sukanya and she started learning how to sew at Kumbheswori Stitching Institute to shape her new life and support her family too. A new phase of her life began when she heard about Hamri Bahini Enterprise over the radio and made a call to learn about Hamri Bahini. The following day, she stepped into the doors of the Social Enterprise and joined the enterprise as one of the Bahini’s. Despite poor financial conditions, she always believed that she could contribute to uplift her society through any means possible. And this came true when she started sewing bags for a cause. From a chapter of sadness and problems to book of delights, a new world of boundless opportunities has come to her. Hamri Bahini brought a remarkable change in Sukanya’s life. She not only enjoys working at Hamri Bahini daily but she also grew as a responsible contributing member of her community, Her self-confidence has got a marvelous boost. She shares a stronger bond with her friends, family and her community as well. Gone are the days when she had to worry about finances. Today, she is earning respect for the job she does. She feels accomplished that she is producing green bags that aid to create an environment friendly world. She imagines to continue growing as a contributing member of her community. Sukanya mentions “Whenever I witness people carrying the Hamri Bahini Bag, I feel really proud and content. This has earned me my identity.” Quote: “I don’t dream of having my own tailor or much economic growth, rather I prefer working for some social and environmental cause.” Sukanya is currently taking English classes at Hamri Bahini being taught by volunteers.
